The Court Jester
By far the most famous film dedicated to jesters. This 1956 farce stars Danny Kaye as Giacomo, King of Jesters and Jester to Kings. I have the whole transcript here, you lucky people, and if you go down to the music section you'll find at least one of the songs up for download.

What's it about? (From the IMDB) 'The rightful king of England, the small babe with the purple pimpernel birthmark, has been usurped by the evil King Roderick. Only the Black Fox can restore the true king to the throne--and all he needs is the king's key to a secret tunnel. And while he's trying to steal it, someone has to change the king's diapers. The task falls to Hawkins, the gentlest member of the Fox's band. The Fox's lieutenant, Maid Jean, guards Hawkins and the babe while they travel, but when they meet the King's new jester on the road, they decide to initiate a daring plan for Hawkins to replace him, become an intimate at the court, and steal the key. So, humble Hawkins becomes Giacomo: the king of jesters and jester to the king. But things begin to get zany when the King's daughter falls for Giacomo, the King falls for Jean, people randomly sing what are supposed to be recognition codes, and a witch with very effective spells (and poison pellets) begins to interfere. '

Other films
Well, you can barely find a mention of any other jester films. I've come across references to the following:
Jester (1999) Animated. IMDB comments: A really enjoyable short film. Set in the middle ages in England, the wicked queen has stolen the world`s laughter. The world has now become depressed and only the Court Jester can save them. Great animation the old fashion way no computer graphics in sight.
The Jester (1999) Can't find a thing about this one. Female actor credited as the jester though... interesting.
Jittery Jester (1958) Animated.
The Jester (1937) In Yiddish.
King's Jester (1935) Animated.
Simon the Jester (1925) Silent film. Appears to be a remake of the one below.
Simon, the Jester (1915) Silent film.
The Jester's Joke (1912) Silent film.
The Duke's Jester or A Fool's Revenge (1909). This one has Victor Hugo listed under writing credits, so it's gotta be a version of Le Roi s'amuse/Rigoletto.

Harley Quinn takes on Batman

Jester figures in Batman
Batman - both comic and animation - has always featured a surprising number of jester characters, which I thought deserved a mention; namely the Joker, Harley Quinn, the Riddler, Mad Hatter.

Daffy Duck as the Rude Jester: click here for a larger version

Daffy Duck
This classic shot of Daffy as a jester is from an early Warner Bros. cartoon. Click on the image for a larger version.

Alias the Jester: click for a site about the series

Alias the Jester
Wonderful British children's cartoon from 1986 about a superhero from outer space who finds himself stuck as King Arthur's jester. Won a Bafta, apparently... Click here for a site with more information.

Arthur and the Square Knights of the Round Table

I've been told that there's also a very similar Australian film called Arthur and the Square Knights of the Round Table.

Card Captor Sakura; click for more pics

Card Captor Sakura
Japanese animated series (chopped up in the US and UK to make a series called Cardcaptors). Sakura wears a different outfit every time she catches a Clow Card. The jester motif appears surprisingly often in the series; click here to see. For a great page about the series, go to The Cherry Blossom Festival.

Malone, jester from Highlander: The Animated Series

Highlander: The Animated Series
Personal old favourite! Children's cartoon series from 1994, which diverged wildly from the standard Highlander storyline and was set in a far-future apocalyptic landscape. The big bad guy had a most wonderful court jester, who fulfilled the role perfectly by sitting around telling the truth in amusing ways (and generally getting hit for it). His name was Malone and he was voiced by the lovely Lorne Kennedy, who generously donated the above image of an original series cell he owns. Click here to see the full image.

From Lorne himself: 'For some reason, call me madcap, my net-cruising took me thru your site where my attention was caught by my own name. I was very glad to see that Malone was included in your media collection as a favourite. He was one of my most favourite roles, too. The series was recorded in Toronto at Nelvana, back when it was still Canadian owned, but created and produced by the French company Gaumont. At the conclusion of the recording the producers gave each of the regular performers a cell of their character. I noticed that you mentioned it was almost impossible to get any further information or stills so I'll attach a scan of cell they gave me. I don't know if it will be of any use or interest to you but it was just very gratifying to see that the roistering fool has not completely vanished.'

As I've already mentioned above, there are tons of jesterish figures in Batman.

Daredevil and The Jester

And not wanting to leave Marvel Comics out of the action; the comic Daredevil features an endearingly psychotic recurring villain called The Jester. I have a whole gallery of scans for this character; click here to see.
Yet another jester villain: Funny Face. This one exists in an alternate Marvel comics future, where Spider-Man had a daughter who grew up to inherit his powers and become Spider-Girl. The series started in October 1998 and has a modern airbrushed look which I love;

Nine out of ten of the requests I get for music are for music from the Court Jester movie. So I've finally given in to public opinion and put a permanent Court Jester section in. Scroll down to the bottom of the music section and you'll find it... ^_^

These are a few of my favourite jester songs. If there's a song on my list that you particularly want, feel free to email me with the title and I'll put it up.

Harlequin album cover

6.63Mb: 4 mins 42 secs

A beautiful, mellow piece of Brazilian jazz by the classic collaboration of Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour, sung by Ivan Lins. Listen to this. It will do good things to your mind, I promise. Click here for the lyrics, in Brazilian Portuguese and English translation.

Once Upon A Mattress

The Minstrel, The Jester and I

1.99Mb: 2 mins 7 secs

A wonderful... er, trio. From the musical 'Once Upon A Mattress', an updated version of 'The Princess and the Pea'. The song is sung by a Minstrel, a Jester, and the King, who is mute. But he's definitely there. You just have to imagine the actions that go with the song... Click here for the lyrics.

Click for pictures of this production!

Wooooooo! A very nice lady sent me some gorgeous pics of a Once Upon a Mattress production. Click here to see 'em.

Pastorale album, by Eric Tingstad & Nancy Rumbel

The Jester

5.12Mb: 3 mins 38 secs

Another mellow one - beautiful mediaeval-sounding instrumental, by Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel, from their album Pastorale. Lovely oboe refrain (at least, I think it's an oboe).

Mirrors album cover - Blue Oyster Cult

The Great Sun Jester

4.48Mb: 4 mins 46 secs

Well, by way of a change, here's a bit of rock for you! Blue Oyster Cult's Great Sun Jester, from the album Mirrors. Even if you aren't into rock, it's well worth trying this one; a song about (and I quote from some BOC fan's webpage) 'a wonderfully sad incarnation of the trickster archetype'. What he said. Based on The Fireclown, a book by Michael Moorcock (also released as The Winds of Limbo). Lyrics here.

Elly K

2.18Mb: 2 mins 23 secs

Now this is just a lovely one. Elly K is a Russian-American singer-songwriter, and you can visit her site here. She's not yet well known, but if this song is representative I hope she soon will be! The song is a lovely, slightly dreamy thing with a clear vocal over a whimsical circus-clown music style instrumental. Click here for lyrics and more songs to listen to.

Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant (Parts I & II)

10.4Mb: 11 mins 26 secs

By Chick Corea, from the album Return to Forever. Up on request!

The King's New Clothes

3.25Mb: 3 mins 33 secs

Ugly Duckling

2.83Mb: 3 mins 6 secs

Anywhere I Wander

2.98Mb: 3 mins 15 secs

Some Danny Kaye goodies. These are from the film Hans Christian Andersen; they're marked 'The Court Jester' because they come from the ALBUM of that name which featured music from the Court Jester and Hans Christian movies. Please don't email me and tell me I labelled them wrong, I get that a lot. ^_^;;

'Jester' in her humanoid form

The computer game 'Chronomaster' (circa 1994) was celebrated science-fiction/fantasy author Roger Zelazny's final work. Very similar to but more complex than the Kyrandia series in gameplay, the 'Jester' is in this case the name of the protagonist's spaceship - and its quirky AI personality who acts as your boon companion. 'She' has three manifestations: the ship itself (vaguely resembling a wild purple jester's cap in appearance), the floating blue smiley-face 'PDA' accompanying you in your field-work, and the punkish anthropomorphic hologram keeping you company in the confines of the ship.
