Of the Birth and Career of Mr J. Segundus

John Segundus was five years old when he announced to his mother that there were shining little people who lived in their garden.

John Segundusí mother did not beat him, as most mothers might; she sighed, and because he was a sweet-natured boy who did not resemble his father in anything save his Italian-dark eyes and hair (so odd in their blue-eyed country!), she sat him down and explained very carefully why one does not enter intercourse with fairies.

John Segundus listened, and since he was an obedient child, he from then on resolved only to be a theoretical magician.
